About Encinitas

Encinitas, located in San Diego County, California, has a history dating back centuries. Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who thrived in the region’s fertile valleys and along its coastline, the area later attracted Spanish explorers in the 18th century. The name “Encinitas,” meaning “little oaks” in Spanish, reflects the area’s abundant oak trees.

In the late 19th century, Encinitas began to attract settlers drawn by its mild climate, fertile soil, and picturesque landscapes. Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of flowers, (famously the poinsettia flower) avocados, lemons and lima beans became a mainstay of the local economy. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in the early 20th century further spurred growth and development in the area.
Encinitas evolved from a rural farming community into a vibrant coastal city known for its beautiful beaches, thriving arts scene, and laid-back atmosphere. Today, it remains a desirable destination for residents and visitors alike, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and recreational opportunities.
